Painting is a common method for refining sensitive wood surfaces. Today the coating application is often done by machines. The overspray is thus largely recycled. A roller coating machine consists of three rollers: dosing roller, application roller, smoothing roller. Depending on the requirements, the machines differ considerably, e.g. in working width, feed speed, operating side and degree of automation. The spectrum ranges from small workshop machines to fully automatic painting systems. Surplex offers a large selection of used roller coating machines, e.g. from HYMMEN, SUPERFICI, CEFLA, SORBINI, BÜRKLE, KUPER and GIARDINA.

A roller coater (also known as, or available in certain variations as, a roller coating machine, varnishing machine, or lacquering machine) is a machine used to apply putty or primer on a workpiece, in order to close up the pores on its surface. Roller coaters are used to apply and smooth out the layer of lacquer. Roller coating is an automated, economical procedure of coating different surfaces using a roller coater, primarily performed on great tolerance non-flat surfaces and joint gaps that are difficult to control.

The workpiece is guided over rollers or a conveyor belt. During the first operational step of the lacquering machine, the lacquer is applied using an application head that usually contains an applicator roll covered in rubber and a dosing roll made out of metal. The smooth coating head rotates in the opposite direction from the application head, which is why it's usually called the reverse head. Modern roller coating machines dry the workpieces with the help of UV-rays, thus reducing the hardening time and preventing the emission of harmful vapours.

The first lacquer used in 5000 B.C. in China was made from the resin of lacquer trees. The secretions of the lac insect were dissolved when the trees were heated, and then as they cooled, they formed a protective layer. In the 18th century, various lacquers were produced at high temperatures. It was only discovered during the industrial age that lacquer has a protective function in terms of the preservation of the value of goods and buildings.

The first waterproof lacquer was produced in 1837. New binding agents, synthetic paint resins and emulsion paints were developed in the 20th century, as well as various machines for their application, the precedents of modern roller coaters. Today, the developments of roller coating machines are focused on areas such as the reduction of emissions and self-cleaning solvents or paints.

Coating processes are subject to the standard DIN EN 971-1. A coating of several layers should contain a base adhesive layer that covers unsightly surfaces and protects metals from corrosion. The second layer contains more pigment and acts as a filler to smooth out unevenness. The third layer is the coloured paint layer. Finally, the clear lacquer acts as a covering layer, to protect the workpiece against impact and wear and tear. Roller coating machines are used to coat flat wood surfaces, fibre board and veneer technology. Other materials that can be processed with a roller coater include cardboard, corrugated cardboard and foil, that are hardened on one side using UV-rays. Different parts of furniture are processed in coating lines, while roller coaters also allow for a constant reproducible quality at a low cost.

Several companies have specialised in the manufacturing of roller coaters. Some of the most recommended roller coating machine suppliers include CEFLA Gruppe and SORBINI. In addition to standard roller coating machines, at Surplex.com it is also possible to find a complete lacquering machine, a varnishing machine, or even entire coating lines for sale in good condition and at a competitive price. In addition, we recommend checking our numerous industrial auctions and subscribing to our newsletter in order not to miss any special offers in the future.
